Gary has been with Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary since 1980 when he joined the force as a cadet. Two years later he was appointed as a Constable and has worked in Stranraer, Annan, Gretna and Dumfries, including a stint in Dumfries CID.
In 1988 Gary joined the Lockerbie investigation and his involvement with this case continued in 2000 when he was deputy site manager at Kamp van Zeist in the Netherlands.
In 1992 he was promoted to Sergeant in Stranraer and has served the town as Inspector and Acting Chief Inspector before being promoted to Detective Chief Inspector covering serious crime and the Ports Unit.
Over the course of his 25 year career Gary has acted as senior investigating officer on a number of serious crime and murder investigations. He has also received two commendations, the first in 1982 when he saved a man from drowning in Stranraer harbour and the second for his dedication to the policing arrangements for the Lockerbie trial in 2001.
Gary is local to Stranraer and is married with two daughters. When he manages to grab some spare time Gary enjoys running, mountain biking and football, especially supporting Stranraer FC.
Due to organisational reconstructing, Superintendent Gary Small is the Divisional Commander for both Dumfries Division and Galloway Division for an indeterminate period of time.
