Family Protection Unit

Formed in 1999, the Family Protection Unit is, in effect, the amalgamation of two specialist teams, namely Domestic Abuse and the Female and Child Unit.

The Family Protection Unit provides a conduit for the investigation of crime of an abusive and sexual nature. The unit deals primarily with the following crimes: -

  • Unexplained Child Deaths
  • Rape
  • Assault with intent to ravish
  • Incest
  • Lewd, Indecent and Libidinous practices
  • Shameless and Indecent Conduct
  • Unlawful Sexual Intercourse (where there is aggravation because of age and occupation of the offender)
  • Aggravated sexual offences in general
  • Cruel and un-natural treatment of children
  • Serious non-accidental injuries to children
  • Abortion and Concealment of pregnancy
  • Serial or serious abuse of vulnerable adults
  • Domestic Abuse

The unit is led by a Detective Inspector, supported by two Detective Sergeants, six Constables and two Administrative Support Staff.

The officers wear plain clothes and use unmarked cars.
