Motorcycle Unit

The force has an established motorcycle unit staffed by two officers attached to the Road Safety Unit within Operational Support Services, based at Cornwall Mount, Dumfries.

The remit for the unit is general road policing while acting in support of Road Safety initiatives, both national and local. A closer involvement has recently been developed in the Road Safety Unit with regard to the education of school children as pedestrians, cyclists and car passengers.

The unit currently use BMW R1200RT police specification motorcycles. These motorcycles vary from the standard model in that they are fitted with a different braking system, have top loading panniers, a single seat behind which is a radio box containing the control units for the radios and emergency equipment and are fitted with time and distance speed detection devices (VASCAR). When on patrol the motorcycles also carry hand held radar and laser speed meters.
