Firearm Licensing

Firearm legislation categorises firearms. In simple terms, low powered air rifles are firearms but not subject to licensing.

Certain other firearms, such as antiques and humane killers, may be exempt from certification provided they fulfil defined criteria but advice should be sought before possessing these without a certificate.

A shot gun is defined as:

  • having a barrel not less than 24 inches in length with a bore less than 2 inches
  • having either no magazine or one incapable of holding more than two shots
  • is not a revolver gun and requires to be shown on a Shot Gun certificate.

A firearm may only be lawfully deactivated if this is done to an approved standard and certified by a Proof House.
