Hillwalking Route Card

Following the success of a pilot scheme launched in November 2003 Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary have joined forces with the Galloway and Moffat Mountain Rescue Teams and the Tourist Board to launch an electronic route notification system for hillwalkers.

In a scheme, thought to be the first of its kind in Scotland, walkers can log on to the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team or Moffat Mountain Rescue Team websites and complete an online form which records details of:

  • Estimated time of departure
  • Vehicle location
  • Vehicle registration number (including any second vehicle)
  • Mobile phone number
  • Start date, time and grid reference
  • Intended route
  • End date, time and grid reference
  • Emergency contact details

The information on the form is then forwarded to our Force Communications Centre. Police staff will then be able to access walkers' details if a search or rescue is required.

Walkers should note the information they provide will not be checked and are advised to leave a copy of their route with a responsible person.
